Tips for Training a Pooton Puppy in the Wintertime

Training a Pooton puppy during the colder months of winter presents some unique challenges, but also some opportunities for bonding and fun. These puppies, a delightful cross between a Poodle and a Coton de Tulear, are smart and eager to please. This makes them relatively easy to train, regardless of the season. Here are some effective tips for training your puppy when the weather outside is frightful:

Indoor Training Sessions

Winter weather can sometimes make outdoor training difficult. Fortunately, Pootons are small enough that indoor training is entirely feasible. Create a designated training space where your puppy can focus without distraction. This could be a quiet corner of your living room or any space where you can consistently train without interruptions.

Keep your sessions short in length. Puppies do not have much of an attention span, especially when they first get to a new home. So, aim for multiple 5–10-minute sessions throughout the day instead of one long session. And try to keep the focus on basic commands like sit, stay, come, and down. Use positive reinforcement such as praise, petting, or treats to reward your puppy for following commands.

Outdoor Considerations

Weather permitting, outdoor training is still beneficial for socialization and exposure to different environments. Be sure to dress your puppy appropriately. Pootons have hair that offers some insulation, but a small dog sweater or coat can provide additional warmth during the short trips outside. It’s also smart to choose the warmest part of the day for outdoor activities to make training more comfortable for both you and the puppy. Keep your puppy moving to help them stay warm. Practicing recall (to come when called) is a great way to do this, as it involves lots of running back and forth.

Socialization and Play

Socialization shouldn’t stop just because it’s cold outside. Arrange playdates with other vaccinated puppies. This can often be done indoors at your home or at a friend’s house. You can also visit pet-friendly stores, which can be a good opportunity for socialization when the parks are too cold.

Winter training for your Pooton puppy can be a wonderful experience that strengthens your bond and ensure it grows into a well-behaved, socialized dog.
